Mulungu: The Research Explained
What the research actually says about this Amazonian botanical, and how it's traditionally used for relaxation and sleep.
Mulungu (Erythrina mulungu) has long been used in Brazilian folk medicine as a natural calmative. Modern research is still early — most studies are in animals, and there is no human clinical trial testing Mulungu for sleep itself. The strongest evidence is for its calming, anxiety-reducing effects. Here's what each study found.
Eased anxiety before surgery (human study)
In a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial, 30 healthy adults took 500 mg of Mulungu or placebo before wisdom-tooth surgery. Mulungu produced a calming effect and was preferred over placebo — especially by more anxious patients — without affecting blood pressure, heart rate or oxygen levels.

Reduced anxiety-like behaviour (animal study)
Rats given a Mulungu extract were tested in standard anxiety models. At 200 mg/kg, the extract reduced anxious behaviour in a way similar to diazepam, acting on a specific subset of defensive responses.

Calming effect held with regular use (animal study)
A follow-up tested repeated, longer-term dosing of the same extract on anxiety-related responses in rats, extending the earlier single-dose findings to ongoing use.

Active calming compounds identified (animal study)
Researchers isolated individual alkaloids from Mulungu flowers and tested them in mice. Erythravine and 11α-hydroxy-erythravine produced clear anxiolytic-like effects, pinpointing the compounds responsible for the plant's calming action.

Protected against seizures (animal study)
In rats, two Mulungu alkaloids were tested against chemically induced seizures. They delayed seizure onset and protected the animals, with effects linked to GABA — the same calming pathway many sleep and anti-anxiety medicines target.

Anticonvulsant with mild calming action (animal study)
The alkaloid erysothrine was isolated and screened. It blocked seizures and showed mild anxiolytic activity, though it did not work through simple GABA uptake — suggesting a more complex mechanism.

Promoted longer sleep in animal tests (animal study)
A study on Mulungu stem-bark extract found that it extended sleeping time in mice given a sedative — the closest evidence to a sleep effect, though in animals and alongside a sleep-inducing drug.
